First off, May the Fourth be with you! Hahaaaa couldn't help it. Anyways, it's been nearly a year since I last wrote in here and figured some general updates should be made and just a general HELLO!
I finished up my 3 month stint in Texas last October and while it was a good experience, it wasn't one I was keen on repeating anytime soon. In December I was promoted to the lead position at my hospital and helped to oversee a massive electronic record system transition in the ER. December-March were definitely among the most stressful months of my life ever, but again good experience. I got into the nursing program I wanted to and start next Monday, hence I quit my job at the end of March and have been relaxing all of April.
I went to WonderCon dressed as Daria from Daria and got to meet Jay Baruchel and Dean DeBlois of HTTYD! Absolute best! When I asked for a picture, Dean leaned out thinking I only wanted a picture with Jay and I went, "No no no! I want one with both of you!" Dean looked gratified because from what I could tell he had been doing this for most of the autograph session and seriously, I admire them both so much. I even got to see the first hour of HTTYD 2 and nearly cried because it was fantastic. They didn't have the score with it, but the film was still amazing for what we saw. I cannot wait for June 13 now!
Last weekend I went to Disneyland and California Adventure with my sister, , and we had a grand time. It was her first time in a long time to California Adventure, so she got to experience Cars Land and World of Color for the first time. Disneyland was ridiculously packed, but we still managed to get everything done that we wanted to, including meeting Thor and Captain America. We would have gone to meet the Frozen princesses, but their wait time was 3 hours at least. We ended up meeting Merida instead which was literally one of the best meet and greet experiences I've ever had.
On the creative end, I've gotten a brand new story idea that I've been brainstorming on for the last week and a half. I've also continued developing Icebound and Imaginary, though the latter is more developed than the first. At the start of April I had the pleasure of going to the LA Times Festival of Books and sitting in on a panel of young adult authors, including Ann Brashares and Eoin Colfer. Brashares gave some advice that I needed to hear: pick something to finish and finish it. She and I shared the same problem where we'd start something and then never finish it because we'd get side tracked with another idea. So with that advice in mind, I'm going between my three story ideas and trying to determine which one to stick with for the long haul. Right now it's looking like my newest idea because I'm the most excited about it, but we'll see!
With regards to drawing, I've tried to draw in my sketch book more regularly. I see small improvements here and there, but nothing major. Last month I went to the park on a Sunday afternoon with a graphic artist friend of mine and we spent a large portion of the afternoon drawing the trees and geese. She even let me try some of her drawing tools and I think I may be in love with watercolor pencils now. I want to get better at drawing and so shall continue to practice. I also need to practice digitally, and now that I have a working Paint Tool SAI on my Mac, I plan on using it more. Any tips for working digitally? I can never seem to get good brush settings to start with :\
Anyways, not much else going on. Expect some posted drabbles. Further updates will be few and far between as I embark on nursing school, but it's only for a year so wahoo!
